Leaving Exmouth heading east, this route follows the old railway line towards Budleigh Salterton.


The trail leads through traditional Devon countryside and pockets of woodland before arriving in the classic seaside town of Budleigh Salterton. Known for its long pebble beach and relaxed seafront, it’s a lovely place to stop, explore, and refuel — with a crab sandwich on the beach being a well-earned local favourite.

 

The Route Breakdown

  • Starting Point: Exmouth Train Station Begin your adventure at the Exmouth train station, right next to our shop, where the route quickly transitions into a 20mph residential road. This short on-road section is safe and easy to navigate, especially with its residential speed limits.

  • Phear Park and Beyond After passing through Phear Park, you'll encounter a few brief stretches on roads within Exmouth. These sections are manageable and lead you seamlessly to the old railway line.

  • The Disused Railway Line Once on the disused railway line, the real charm of the route unfolds. This section, with its smooth tar surface, guides you through lush, tranquil woodlands, making it a highlight of the journey. The peaceful surroundings and the absence of traffic create a perfect environment for families and young children.

  • Approaching Budleigh Salterton As you near the outskirts of Budleigh Salterton, the route shifts onto normally quiet roads, guiding you gently into the village. This part of the journey remains relaxed and scenic, eventually leading you to the beach.
