Terrain: Flat, traffic-free cycle path

Ideal for: Families, beginners, relaxed riders

Alternative Starting Point: Maer Road Car Park, adding in Exmouth Beach and Marina to ride

Why this ride works for families

This is one of the most popular and enjoyable rides on the Exe Estuary Trail — and for good reason. It’s mostly flat, mostly cycle path and  separated from traffic, and packed with things to see and do along the way.

You’ll ride alongside the River Exe, spotting birds, boats and wide open skies, with plenty of places to stop whenever little legs (or grown-ups) need a break.

The Exe Estuary Trail is built for stress-free cycling. Because the path is "mostly" off road and flat, it is a safe environment for children riding independently, in a child seat, or on a tag-along.

What to look for along the way

As you head north from Exmouth, the route opens up into some of Devon's most beautiful landscapes:

  • Lympstone Village: A brief detour takes you into this historic fishing village—great for a quick look at the harbour.
  • Estuary Wildlife: The mudflats are a haven for birds; look out for avocets and curlews as you ride.
  • Green Spaces: There are several spots to pull over if little legs need a break or a quick snack.

Arriving in Topsham

Topsham is a historic merchant town and makes for a very good halfway point. It has a relaxed, continental feel with plenty of options for a break:

  • Food & Drink: Choose from several family-friendly pubs, artisan bakeries, or local ice cream parlours.
  • Rest Stops: There is a small playground near the quay and plenty of riverside seating to watch the boats.

Adding to your adventure

If you want to extend your day, there are a few simple ways to add a bit more variety:

  1. The Topsham Ferry: You can cross the water via the Topsham Ferry to reach the Turf Locks or catch a boat back toward Exmouth.
  2. Darts Farm: Just before you reach Topsham, a side-path leads to [Darts Farm], which features a large play area, farm animals, and a famous food hall.
  3. A La Ronde: A short detour from the trail leads to this unique 16-sided National Trust house with views across the estuary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best places to park in Exmouth for this ride?

The most convenient spot is the Estuary Long Stay Car Park (EX8 1BZ), located right next to the Exmouth Train Station and the start of the trail. For a more scenic start along the seafront, many riders prefer Maer Road Car Park (EX8 2DB).

Are there toilets along the route?

Yes, there are several well-spaced facilities:

Can I bring my dog on the trail?

Absolutely. The trail is popular with dog owners, but dogs must be kept on a short lead. For a more relaxed experience, we offer dog trailers so your four-legged friend can enjoy the views without getting tired.

What happens if the kids get too tired to cycle back?

One of the best things about this route is the Avocet Line train. You can hop on at Topsham Station and be back in Exmouth in about 10 minutes. Just check for bike space availability during busy periods.

Is the path suitable for trailers or tag-alongs?

Yes. The path is wide, paved, and almost flat, making it ideal for towing trailers, using tag-alongs, or for children riding their own bikes for the first time.
